Kauri Dieback Track Upgrades Programme
Kauri Dieback Track Upgrades Programme

Design and project management of a programme of track upgrades including over 30 tracks in the Auckland Council Regional and Local Parks to mitigate the transfer of Kauri Dieback Disease by track users.
Numerous initiatives were achieved on this project to achieve better sustainable outcomes including the following:

  • Composite decking comprised of recycled plastic and timber waste material.

  • No dig foundation options including ‘ground hogs’, screw piles and tube foundations which eliminate excavations and concrete in foundation construction.

  • Standardised design to enable pre-fabrication of materials to reduce waste on site and less material helicoptered in and then out of sites.

  • Minimal impact design.

Works on these culturally, archaeologically and geologically sensitive maunga required innovative and flexible design solutions to limit damage to the sites. The final design had to be as sustainable as possible and reversible whilst still providing positive user experiences for the local communities and international visitors alike.
